Meditation 101

Updated: Jun 11

There is so much information on meditation. There are countless apps and news articles about meditation. But what exactly is it?

Merriam -Webster dictionary defines it as "to engage in contemplation or reflection".

The intention of meditation is to try to eliminate the constant thoughts that enter the mind, long enough for mind to become still and your body to relax. Just the act of coming to a place of stillness allows for calm and relaxation. Eliminating the thoughts in the mind is challenging. For me, not possible. I take each day at a time, depending on when I able to carve out time that day and for how long. My practice starts with focus breaths, following the breath on the inhales/exhales. If i can stay there without thoughts sneaking in, I am good. Some days, I add a count to the inhale/exhale, breathing in for a count of 4, exhaling for that same count. I notice that help really helps me with focus.

Meditation is not limited to a seated position, remaining still and eyes closed. There are many other ways to meditate. Qi Gong, Tai Chi, Yoga, slow deliberant walking, guided meditation and even adult coloring books.

Benefits of meditation include improved sleep, managing stress better, increased awareness of your surroundings, improved focus, increased patience and tolerance, physical well being and deep relaxation.

Start out by keeping things simple. Experiment and find ways that support your practice of meditation. Finding a time that you can be consistent with, your specific position of comfort and a place free of distractions. Start slow with how long you meditate. Start with one minute a day and add more time as you feel comfortable.
